A Natural Cure For Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis, more commonly referred to as excessive sweating, is estimated to afflict around 8 million Americans. It is a condition that can cause the sufferer to sweat profusely from the underarms, palms of the hands, feet and face. This level of sweating goes beyond what the body requires to regulate its core temperature, and can leave the individual affected quite literally soaking in sweat whilst those around them remain dry and comfortable.

In situations like this anxiety can further exacerbate the problem as the sufferer, conscious of his or her sweating, becomes focused on the problem and reinforces the sweating cycle. Furthermore, certain foods and drinks can also contribute to the excessive sweating experienced by sufferers.

There is no known cure for Hyperhidrosis. However, there are a number of commercial treatments on the market including Aluminium chloride (hexahydrate) solution, Botulinum toxin type A (including Botox) and certain oral drugs.

Aluminium chloride (hexahydrate) solution . Aluminium chloride is the best known active substance for stopping sweating and is used in most antiperspirants. Sufferers of excessive sweating will need to use antiperspirants with a higher concentration of aluminium chloride; upwards of 15%. Whilst being very effective at blocking the pores it can, for some patients, cause irritation of the skin forcing the users to cut back on the number of applications that can be made. The use of aluminium chloride on the palms of the hands and feet is not particularly effective.

Botulinum toxin type A (including Botox) . Botox, when injected into the sweat gland, will render them temporarily inactive thus providing relief to the sufferer. However, apart from the relatively high cost associated with botox injections, this procedure only provides temporary relief; somewhere between 4 and 9 months on average.

Anticholinergic drugs . There are a couple of orally administered drugs that fall into the anticholinergic class of drugs which show promising signs of being able to reduce sweating. Ditropan (generic name: oxybutynin) is one that is promising. However, with side effects such as drowsiness, visual symptoms and dryness in the mouth and in other mucus membranes most people cannot tolerate the drug for too long. A time release version of the drug, called Ditropan XL, is also available. Robinul (generic name: glycopyrrolate) is another drug used on an off-label basis. The drug seems to be almost as effective as oxybutynin, with similar side-effects such as a dry mouth or dry throat often leading to pain in these areas.

People are becoming concerned about the longer term effects on their health of using drugs and roll-on applications to control excessive sweating. As more an more people are turning away from highly processed food and drink so to are sufferers of excessive sweating looking for more 'healthy' ways to control their over sweating.
