What is Sculptra?
There are many forms of chemical injections that can be used to treat wrinkles, fine lines and other indentations on the skin. However, most of the facial fillers and muscle paralyzers that are used for treating small lines and wrinkles are not generally good enough to fill in large areas. Sunken eyes, hollowed cheeks, and indented chins all require a stronger product to fill them. There is a solution that has been available in Europe for about a decade that is new to the United States that you can consider. Sculptra is a chemical injection similar to Botox or Restylane that fills in the hollow spots on the face, and provides up to 80 percent better appearance of the treated area. The results can be seen fully within three to six treatment sessions, and can last for up to two years, which is much longer than Botox or another cosmetic filler that is used for less serious procedures. The injection takes place at your doctor, and is performed with topical or local anesthetic. This makes it very safe, because there is no risk of side effects from general anesthesia. The needle can cause a little discomfort for patients. The procedure will last between 15 and 30 minutes, and there is no recovery time for patients who are treated. They can leave the office within minutes and resume normal activity with no problems. The Sculptra injection is synthetic. It is a Poly-L-lactic acid material that has commonly been used in dissolvable stitches and some implants made of soft tissue. When we exercise, our bodies produce a natural form of this material, which makes it completely compatible and eradicates the need for any skin testing prior to administration. First the doctor will select the injection sites, usually marking them somehow. Then they will determine how much of the material is needed and begin the injection process. It is advised to use ice after treatment, as this procedure can cause some minimal swelling in the treated areas. Massaging the area is also encouraged, as it promotes even distribution of the product. Sun exposure should be limited after Sculptra injections, although normal life should resume immediately. Touchups might be required every six weeks to get the best result, but that will be a decision that is made between you and your doctor. There shouldn't be excessive pain or abnormal issues, so if you have any, you need to let your doctor know right away. The only side affects of the injection are tenderness, redness, and discomfort where the injections were placed, which will go away with in a couple of weeks. When you meet with your doctor to discuss Sculptra as an option for your treatment, they should tell you about any risks and complications, as well as whether they think that this procedure will work for you. You should have realistic expectations with any cosmetic surgery, because it is designed to make things better, not perfect.
