Liposuction basically removes excess fat which is located between the skin and the muscle underneath. If you are having liposuction surgery (which is also known as liposculpture), the doctor will use a small stainless steel tube, called a cannula, which is inserted into the fat through the skin. The cannula is attached to a suction pump, so it suctions out fat through tunnels or channels in the skin. When these channels collapse, you wind up with a firmer shape and more flattering profile. Liposuction can be performed on different body parts, wherever there is excess fat. Liposuction can be used on the abdomen or stomach, to get rid of belly fat. It can also help with muffin tops on the hips and waist area. It can suction excess fat from the inner thighs and outer thighs. It can be done on the arms or back. Liposuction can even be done on the face and chin. Liposuction may be performed in a doctor's office, surgical center or hospital. Plastic surgeons and dermatologists may have special training in liposuction, but any licensed doctor can perform the procedure. This means there will be differences in experience and training, so it's a good idea to look for a qualified board certified plastic surgeon, affiliated, for example, with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). There are different ways a surgeon can perform liposuction, for example either with local anesthesia or with general anesthesia. You may have heard of tumescent liposuction, which is basically a type of liposculpture that uses large amounts of diluted local anesthesia which is injected right into the fat. The liquid makes the area swell or get tumescent, which is where the name comes from. Many surgeons also use microcannulas which are much thinner and can lead to better, smoother results. Liposuction can also be done by combining the tumescent technique and other anesthesia. Surgeons can also use power-assisted, ultrasound, and laser techniques to perform liposuction. If you are considering liposuction, talk to your doctor. Be sure to ask a lot of questions about the type of procedure being done, recovery time, side effects and cost. Even if everything goes well and there are no complications, you will experience some pain and swelling after the procedure. Make sure you read all the printed information your doctor gives you, including what to do afterwards. Be realistic in what you expect - liposculpture won't give you the perfect body overnight, so don't be fooled by ads that promise this. And do not base your decision simply on cost. Know that it won't be cheap. Cost for liposuction can range from $2000 to $10,000 or more depending on how large an area is being treated. You also need to understand that there are risks to liposuction. There can be serious health problems and complications if too much fat is removed at one time. There is also the risk of going under anesthesia. Sometimes liposuction, especially if done by a poorly trained physician, can result in scarring or skin irregularities. There is also the possibility of infection. Finally, don't think you can use liposuction instead of a healthy lifestyle. Liposculpture is not for weight loss. It's really appropriate only if you have some stubborn pockets of fat that won't go away even after you have followed a healthy diet and exercise program.
