Laser Hair Removal - Is it Right For You?
People become interested in long-term or permanent hair removal for many reasons. Some are simply intrigued by the idea of not having to shave legs or armpits as often; others, like some women with moustaches, feel that any hair in a certain area is embarrassing. Fortunately for all of them, hair can be removed with minor pain or effort with the use of a laser. This article will provide details about the process, its advantages, and potential disadvantages. How it Works A laser is just a light with a certain wavelength that makes it very intense. Like all light, it is absorbed by dark objects and reflected by light ones. That simple idea is the entire foundation of this type of cosmetic procedure. Hairs are generally darker than the skin they grow out of; and if not, they can be colored or stained so that they are. When a laser is projected onto the area, therefore, the hairs will absorb intense heat while the skin does not. With any luck this will damage follicles, making it difficult or impossible for hair to re-grow while not damaging the skin at all. The Procedure Many aspects of the procedure, from how it feels to how long it takes, depend on the amount and location of hair being removed. Some locations on the body are more sensitive than others; for example, getting the treatment on armpits or bikini lines can be uncomfortable, while laser treatment on backs or legs is generally much easier. Completing the procedure often requires more than one session. This is because it is only effective on hairs that are actively growing, which is about 1/3 of a person's hair at any given time. A person may need to return for five or so session, usually separated by two months each, to get the full effects. Advantages and Disadvantages The advantages of the procedure are well known. You may lose undesirable hair for a long time or even permanently. It is safe, and generally the discomfort is mild; any pain you do feel during the procedure can be treated with a sedative by your cosmetic surgeon. This is a particularly useful procedure for removing large amount of hair, such as all the hair on a person's legs. The main disadvantage is that the procedure is not right for everyone. People with light hair or dark skin may not get the desired results. Some people also report more pain than others.
